A new height for domestic surgery: Uzbek surgeon Oybek Omonov awarded the prestigious European Pirogov Order for his contribution to the development of high-tech endocrine surgery. A significant event for Uzbek and Central Asian medicine recently took place, confirming the rapid advancement of domestic surgery to the global level of high medical technology. The award ceremony for the International European Nikolai Pirogov Order was held in Moscow, bringing together leading scientists, academics, and eminent surgeons from around the world.
It was a particular source of pride that, among the recognized luminaries of global medicine, the recipient of this prestigious award was our compatriot—Oybek Avazkhanovich Omonov, MD, Head of the Endocrine Surgery Research Department at the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center of Endocrinology named after Academician Y.X. Turakulov, the center's leading surgeon.
An honorary order for outstanding achievements in medicine, the introduction of unique surgical technologies, and a colossal contribution to the development of high-tech surgery in the Republic of Uzbekistan was personally presented by Yuri Leonidovich Shevchenko, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Professor, and President of the N.I. Pirogov National Medical and Surgical Center.
The International European Order of Nikolai Pirogov, established by the Presidium of the European Academy of Natural Sciences in 2004, is considered one of the most prestigious awards in the global medical community. The order is awarded for exceptional personal contributions to the advancement of fundamental science, the introduction of unique surgeries, the creation of new medical schools, and the development of high-tech medicine.
With this award, the international medical community officially recognized the outstanding achievements of the Uzbek surgical school and the breakthrough achievements of the Endocrinology Center of Uzbekistan in the field of complex endocrine and minimally invasive surgery.
Today, under the leadership and direct involvement of Oybek Omonov, the Endocrinology Center is actively developing a whole new field of high-tech endocrine surgery, comparable to the level of leading global clinics. A special place among these achievements is occupied by the introduction of a unique endoscopic thyroidectomy—a modern, minimally invasive thyroid surgery performed without a neck incision. Uzbekistan became the first country in the CIS to implement this technology and begin performing it on a systematic clinical basis.
Endoscopic thyroidectomy is considered a "high-tech" surgical procedure.
Another key area has become laparoscopic adrenalectomy—a high-tech, minimally invasive procedure for removing adrenal tumors. This type of surgery is considered one of the most complex areas of endocrine surgery, as the adrenal glands are located deep within the body, close to major vessels and vital organs.
Hormonally active adrenal tumors pose particular challenges, as any careless surgical intervention can cause critical surges in blood pressure, severe metabolic crises, and life-threatening complications during surgery. This is why laparoscopic adrenalectomy is performed only in specialized, high-tech centers and requires perfect collaboration between surgeons, anesthesiologists, and endocrinologists.
Furthermore, the Endocrinology Center is actively developing high-tech pancreatic surgeries, including complex procedures for neuroendocrine tumors, space-occupying lesions, and combined endocrine pathologies.
Adding to the complexity of these surgeries is the fact that patients at the Endocrinology Center often have severe comorbidities—diabetes, obesity, severe metabolic disorders, and hormonal dysfunctions—which significantly increase surgical risks and complicate recovery.
Despite this, domestic surgeons successfully perform complex, high-tech procedures, demonstrating a level of expertise comparable to leading global medical centers.
Just a few years ago, patients with similar diagnoses were forced to seek expensive treatment in Turkey, South Korea, Germany, or Russia. Today, unique, world-class surgeries are available directly in Uzbekistan. Essentially, we are talking about the formation of a new national school of high-tech endocrine surgery based on modern international standards, minimally invasive technologies, patient safety, and accelerated rehabilitation.
The awarding of the International European Order of Nikolai Pirogov to the Uzbek surgeon not only recognizes the personal achievements of Oybek Avazkhovich Omonov, but also represents high international recognition of the rapid development of modern surgery and medical science in the Republic of Uzbekistan.
