What is a prolactinoma? Should everyone take cabergoline?

Many people start taking cabergoline when their prolactin levels are slightly elevated. But this isn't always the case!

A prolactinoma is a benign tumor of the pituitary gland that produces excess amounts of the hormone prolactin.

It can cause the following symptoms:
Menstrual irregularities
Infertility
Milk discharge from the breasts
Decreased libido

Cabergoline is an effective treatment for prolactinoma. However, it is not recommended for use solely due to high prolactin levels.

Before starting cabergoline:
• Repeat prolactin levels;

• Rule out macroprolactin;

• Assess thyroid function;

• Review medications currently being taken;

• An MRI of the pituitary gland should be performed if necessary.

Important! Not every elevated prolactin level indicates a prolactinoma. To avoid misdiagnosis and unnecessary treatment, it's important to undergo an examination by an endocrinologist.

Accurate diagnosis is the most important step to effective treatment.
